We have had a lot of questions seeking clarification as to what Developing Afrika is about and WHY we do what we do.
While my one sentence answer would be: “Developing Afrika is an NGO that seeks to empower youths with entrepreneurial and self development skills for free or at an highly discounted price”, I would like to tell you more.
Developing Afrika was founded May 2016 with a premise of being a solution to the problem of poverty and unemployment amongst youths, with a goal to essentially bring about economic growth. Youths of our generation are so comfortable saying “There are no jobs”, “The government is bad” etc.
Lets be honest with ourselves. How much really can the government do asides putting structures in place? As kids, a lot of us grow up with the entitlement mentality. Expecting mummy, daddy and siblings to feed you and give you all the financial aid you need. While this is necessary, there is an age where it should stop. Unfortunately, this mentality sticks with us as we grow older. We are too comfortable and fail to do the work that is required.
Asides that, we are all quick to claim companies are not employing us, knowing however, that the issue is you not making yourself employable which we would discuss some other time. The questions we should be asking is: HOW MANY PEOPLE CAN THESE COMPANIES REALLY EMPLOY? If the companies fill up their capacity(employed everyone they can), don’t you think we would still have Unemployed graduates? This is simply because the number of unemployed graduates outweigh the number of jobs available in companies.
How about we acquire skills and start earning a living for ourselves, and grow brands which become employers of labor. At Developing Afrika, we are building a community of entrepreneurs who would like to acquire skills but do not have either the financial support or mentorship. We also support them through their entrepreneurship journey.
Note however, that acquiring skills is not limited to aspiring entrepreneurs only. Everyone should have a side hustle. If for whatever reason, you loose your job today, what do you have to fall back on? What is your plan for after graduating? Sit at home and wait for jobs? How about you acquire a skill in school and maximize your job hunt season to network and enhance yourself? Don’t be idle. Remember; An Idle Mind Is The Devil’s Workshop.
What skills are you trying to acquire? What issues are you facing in your business? An you an organization who would like to train youths for free or at an highly discounted price? Please connect with us by sending an email to Media.Developingafrika@gmail.com.
