Variety is the spice of life but no one mentions that with variety comes evident differences.
These differences can be a source of misunderstandings, rivalry and conflict if not handled properly.
However, despite the challenges differences may present, there is beauty in the unity of differences because the evident strengths compliment the differing weaknesses.
Africa is multi-ethnical with some countries having more complex cultures than others.These presenting complexities, cause some tribes to encourage marriage within themselves in order to propagate the known culture that is observed, and also maintain the tradition. This could be threatened by the presence of an outsider who has little or no knowledge of the traditions that are upheld within the culture.
It is beyond having a shared nationality, but about the about cultural differences.
In Africa, those who venture into inter-tribal marriages face a lot of opposition for reasons such as;
- Language
- Food
- Tradition (marriage, burial, child birth etc)
- Festivals
- Mannerisms
- Dressing etc.
In recent times, there has been an increase in inter-tribal marriages, mainly because indigenous languages have been replaced by English language and more people are picking interest in Western dishes. These balances help to unify differing issues found in inter-tribal relationships and provide the opportunity for more interaction.
Also, most modern parents are not very attached to cultural practices, and are open to interacting with other cultures through marriage.
The rich cultures found in different tribes add colour and excitement to marriage events when they happen inter-tribally. The children born into such families have the advantage of learning multiple languages and understanding different cultures which will help them to be more open to different opinions that may be presented to them in the future.
Inter-tribal relationship/marriage is an adventure that grants the participants the opportunity to explore and participate in different cultural experiences, and despite the bright side, interested individuals should know the pros and cons and the long term effects on their relationships and decisions.
