We often hear “don’t burn bridges” when you leave an organization or company or a
relationship. When you exit a company, the way you leave is critical to who or what you become on your path to destiny.
No relationship is unimportant. Even the toxic ones are there to teach one a lesson of self- dependence and right company. Burning bridges is an idiomatic expressions that means to destroy one’s past connections, relationships, or events, in most cases intentionally. We often hear that it is good to burn bridges in relationships that may have been toxic but I beg to differ, don’t burn bridges!
No man is an island. You would need that person’s contact some day in another situation. What do you do when you look down on a relationship and you decided to kill the relationship because of anger or hurt? Years later, when you reflect on those moments, how do you react when you realize how you left that relationship?
In a corporate organization, when you are either dismissed or your job is terminated for any reason, don’t burn bridges. It might be a painful exit filled with betrayal and injustice, but none is worthy of burning. There is something time does to humans; time heals, time changes, time corrects, time humbles everyone. An irritable person today can change in a few years’ time such that they become so gentle and apologetic for their past doings. If the person destroys many relationships because of their bad behavior, how does the person cope when they reach a level where help or support is needed?
Are you in a state of deciding what to do about a bad employer? Relax! You might need that employer’s recommendation in the recent future no matter how excellent your professional career is. I have seen a quote where it is implied why keep a relationship when it hurts you. I would further interject that you don’t have to use that bridge soon, instead leave it be.
Walk away from a toxic relationship or friendship. If you burn the bridge and it gives you light, that light will not last forever. In years to come, the bridge you walk away from may become quirky but can still be amended if you ever return to it.
